Lifestyle Medicine: The 6 Habits Your Doctor Can Prescribe

By Dr. Abhijit A. Adhye, MD, FACP, FSHM · July 15, 2026 · 3 min read

Most of the chronic conditions filling doctors' offices — type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, many cases of obesity — share an uncomfortable truth: they are largely driven by how we live. The hopeful flip side is just as true: how we live is treatable.

That's the premise of lifestyle medicine, a board-certified medical specialty that uses evidence-based lifestyle change as a primary form of treatment — not a vague suggestion on the way out the door. It happens to be one of my three board certifications, and the name of our practice is no accident: lifestyle is the medicine I believe in most.

What Makes Lifestyle Medicine Different

Plenty of doctors will tell you to eat better and exercise. Lifestyle medicine physicians are trained to prescribe it: specific, personalized, measurable interventions with follow-up — the same rigor you'd expect for a medication. The American College of Lifestyle Medicine organizes the field around six pillars, and they make a useful checkup you can run on yourself right now.

The Six Pillars

1. Nutrition. Predominantly whole, plant-forward foods — not perfection, direction. Small sustainable shifts beat dramatic overhauls, which is the entire philosophy behind our nutritional counseling.

2. Physical activity. Both daily movement and intentional exercise, including the resistance training that protects muscle and metabolism as we age.

3. Restorative sleep. Poor sleep quietly drives hunger hormones, blood sugar, blood pressure, and mood. It's often the first thing I investigate when weight won't budge — and one of the most rewarding to fix, because better sleep makes every other pillar easier.

4. Stress management. Chronic stress isn't just unpleasant — it's physiologic, raising cortisol and inflammation. Manageable practices (walks, breath work, time outdoors — Napa makes this easy) have measurable effects.

5. Healthy relationships. Social connection is one of the strongest predictors of longevity in medical literature. It belongs in your health plan as much as your cholesterol does.

6. Avoiding risky substances. Tobacco cessation and thoughtful moderation of alcohol — a meaningful conversation in wine country, and one we have honestly and without judgment.

Where Lifestyle Medicine Meets Your Care

The pillars aren't a self-help list; they're a treatment framework. In our practice, they show up everywhere: a medical weight loss plan that addresses sleep and stress alongside nutrition and medication. A concierge primary care membership with the visit time to actually work through these areas instead of rushing past them. Prevention plans built around your life, your labs, and your goals.

That's the quiet advantage of a physician board-certified in Internal Medicine, Obesity Medicine, and Lifestyle Medicine: your habits, your weight, and your medical care are treated as one connected picture — because they are one.

A Wine Country Prescription

Living in Napa gives you unfair advantages for several pillars at once: year-round walking weather, farmers markets full of pillar-one produce, and a culture that values the table and the people around it. Lifestyle medicine isn't about giving up the life you love here — it's about engineering your days so the healthy choice and the enjoyable choice are usually the same choice.

Start With One Pillar

If six pillars feels like a lot, good news: you only need to start with one. Pick the pillar that's weakest in your life right now, and bring it to your next appointment. We'll build from there — realistically, sustainably, and together.
